Rolf Jacobson reflects on Joel 2:23-32 (the alternate first reading from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost), highlighting the radical promise: “I will pour out my spirit on ALL flesh” Sons & daughters, old & young, even slaves—EVERYONE receives the Spirit. Fulfilled at Pentecost, this is why many traditions ordain women. Jacobson reminds us: one out-of-context verse shouldn’t override Scripture’s broader witness of God’s inclusive vision.
