Biography

Clayton Schmit became provost of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary School of Theology, Lenoir-Rhyne University in Columbia, S.C. in 2012. Prior to that, he served on Fuller Theological Seminary's faculty from 2000 as the Arthur DeKruyter/Christ Church Oak Brook Associate Professor of Preaching and was appointed academic director of the Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts in 2001.

An accomplished choral music director and published composer, he taught Homiletics and a variety of courses in liturgical arts. He has been commissioned to compose hymns and anthems for several churches, along with songs honoring the U.S. Navy aircraft carriers U.S.S. Carl Vinson and Abraham Lincoln. Schmit has published numerous articles and several books including Too Deep for Words: A Theology of Liturgical Expression (2002) and Public Reading of Scripture (2002).
